IRVINE, Calif., July 5 2006 (UPI) -- A wealthy California bond trader and his wife reportedly are donating $10 million to the University of California-Irvine's Stem Cell Research Center. Bill and Sue Gross of Newport Beach, one of California's richest couples, gave UCI $2 million for equipping, staffing and operating the center, as well as pledging an additional $8 million. Bill Gross, founder and chief investment officer of PIMCO, which manages more than $600 billion in assets worldwide, told the Register: "Despite its understandable controversy, there is so much promise in stem-cell research. Scientists hope to use stem cells to better understand disease; foster the development of new, more effective drugs; and even generate healthy cells and tissues to replace those damaged by disease or injury. We're just doing our part in making strides toward saving the lives of the more than 100 million children and adults who are battling incurable illnesses around the world."UC Irvine Stem Cell Research Center

University of Minnesota Medical School: http://mbbnet.umn.edu/ | world map |Our objective at the Stem Cell Institute
is to further our understanding of the potential of stem cells to improve human and animal health. In recognition of the seemingly unlimited potential of stem cells in the treatment of human and animal diseases, the University of Minnesota established the Stem Cell Institute and has provided the institute with nearly $15 million in capital investments. We are proud to be one of the nation's leaders in the field of stem cell research. Institute researchers are making great strides in this emerging field of stem cell biology. Faculty throughout the Academic Health Center and across the University are committed to pursuing the frontiers of stem cell and gene therapy research, which we know is only in its infancy.

The patents stem from University of Wisconsin researcher James Thomson's successful isolation of human embryonic stem cells. Researchers have characterized the patents as so restrictive that they basically lay claim to any work with embryonic stem cell lines, even those derived independently. The University of Wisconsin foundation has defended its patents and has noted that academic researchers are typically granted free licensing rights. However, when the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine announced that the state would receive a royalty on any intellectual property developed by nonprofit grantees, the Wisconsin foundation indicated that it viewed such a move as commercial and would seek to charge the state a licensing fee.
